This fruit has been featured pretty regularly for its numerous health benefits being spotlighted quite frequently in such products as drinks. The pomegranate fruit has a long history and provides individuals with many health benefits when consumed on a regular basis.

The pomegranate fruit is a deep reddish fruit which contains pulpy seeds. The exterior of the fruit has a hard rind and the interior is sectioned off with clusters of seeds. This fruit ranges in size from small to medium. This fruit is native to the northwestern region of India and western Asia. It is cultivated in the United States in warmer climates such as California. In the wild, pomegranate fruit grows in a bush, but under controlled conditions it is trained to grow as a small tree. It can reach heights of about 15 to 20 feet, and the branches of the plant have deep red flowers on the ends.

There is quite a history surrounding the pomegranate fruit. One of the most well known stories that feature this plant is the Greek mythology story of Persephone and Hades which is used to explain the cycle of growth and fertility in nature. Persephone was the daughter of the Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility Demeter. One day while picking flowers, Persephone was kidnapped by Hades the lord of the underworld and death as he wanted her to be his wife. Angry that the gods would allow her daughter to be kidnapped, Demeter decided to prevent the growth of crops for revenge. While in the underworld Persephone consumed seeds from the pomegranate fruit which symbolized marriage.

By eating the seeds Persephone confirmed and sealed her marriage to Hades and the marriage could not be ended. In order to end the barren state of the fields, Zeus, the king of the Gods, made a deal with Demeter and Hades where Persephone would spend two-thirds of the year with her mother Demeter and the other third of the year with her husband Hades. While Persephone was with her mother the crops would flourish. However, the portion of the year that Persephone was with Hades Demeter would make the fields barren as a sign of her sadness. Thus, this is one of the most well known stories which identify the pomegranate fruit and its roots and influence on culture.

Besides cultural importance, the pomegranate fruit is known for its many health benefits. The fruit can be opened and the seeds can be consumed as is. Many companies make drinks from the seeds. There are a number of very popular pomegranate drinks on the market. Many of these drinks stress the health benefits that are to be gained from drinking juice from the pomegranate fruit.
